On Saturday 20th June, I did a forage together with Growing Southwark and residents from Cossall Park estate in the Kirkdale nature garden. Here are some of our findings which will be plotted on a map for the community to use and add to …

Our young foragers were picking nettles and not getting stung. We did use a glove as well. Karen mentioned a rhyme her grandparents had told her ….

Then after plotting nettles, wild rose, plantain, wild plums, wild pears, mulberries, wild rocket, mugwort, hogweed, daisy, hawthorn, elder, poppy, mallow, yarrow, chickweed, cleavers, blackberry on the map we are creating of the Kirkdale nature garden, we sat down and tasted some rowan jam, mulberry and apple jam, and hawthorn jelly. We also had nettle tea, lemon balm and lime flower tea and peppermint, yarrow and elderflower tea.

On Friday 19th June, I went on Becky Beinart’s Field kitchen wild food hunt as part of the Laboratory of Insurrectionary Imagination’s CRASH contingency course at the 2 degrees festival http://www.artsadmin.co.uk/events/event.php?id=637. Few that was a mouthful, but not as much of a mouthful as the nettle and lime leaf burgers that we cooked up with sea purslane and sea lettuce as seasoning.

Becky has made a bespoke bicycle trailer which is a complete kitchen and she cycled round London for 5 days, each day starting out at Bank and cycling in a different direction to find wild food and cook it up. It was an amazing experience.
